Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek presents: An Evening with Lily Tomlin

An Evening with Lily Tomlin in Beaver Creek        March 17, 2009

Underwritten by Judy & Howard Berkowitz and Liz Armstrong & Michelle Alford

Lily Tomlin is one of America’s foremost comediennes. Tomlin has received numerous awards, including six Emmys, two Tony awards, a Drama Desk Award, a CableACE Award, a Grammy Award, two Peabody Awards and an Outer Critics’ Circle Award.

Tomlin joined the sketch comedy show “Laugh-In” in 1969. Several characters she created on that show have stayed with her throughout her career, including the gum-chewing, wisecracking, snorting telephone operator, Ernestine; the bratty five-year-old Edith Ann, seated in an over-sized rocking chair making rude noises while telling stories about her baby brother and pet dog Buster; and the Tasteful Lady, who lives a gracious, naive life of entitlement in the upper class and shades of whom show up in Tomlin’s film role in “All of Me.”

As with many comedy shows, some content may not be suitable for children.

Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek presents: “Tango Fire”

“Tango Fire” February 25, 2009

Graciously underwritten by Sandy & Charles Lloyd

“‘Tango Fire’ blazes with danger and exuberance” - The Boston Globe

Take the sensual chemistry of Tango, danced by five accomplished couples; the passionate music of Astor Piazzolla, played to perfection by live musicians; and the striking voice of Javier ‘Cardenal’ Dominguez, and you have “Tango Fire,” Argentina’s hottest dance export.

Born in Buenos Aires 150 years ago, the Tango went through a major Renaissance in the early 1980s.  Its style and focus have shifted, but the Tango has remained the most passionate and emotive dance in the world. “Tango Fire” explores the history of Tango with intimate duets and blazing group dances. The live accompaniment by Quatrotango and Dominguez is unparalleled and weaves together the technical brilliance and eagerness of the dance.

Under the choreographic direction of Yanina Fajar, “Tango Fire” opens with a demonstration of Milonga, the dance of the people, where the Tango got its start. The evening progresses into modern Tango, epitomized by the timeless compositions of the legendary Astor Piazzolla and aggressive, daring lifts that are always audience pleasers.

Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek presents: The Beach Boys Concert

The Beach Boys         March 7, 2009

Sponsored by the Beaver Creek Property Owners Association

Signature sounds of the 1960s California surfin’ culture

The Beach Boys’ sunny vocal harmonies are one of the signature sounds of the modern era. They return to the Vilar Performing Arts Center for an encore, after selling out the theatre in winter 2008.

The Beach Boys began mostly as a family affair in the Los Angeles suburb of Hawthorne, California in 1961. Brothers Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson joined with cousin Mike Love and friend Alan Jardine to form the original group.

Their earliest hits, “Surfin’,” “Surfin’ Safari,” “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “Surfer Girl,” all released in 1962-63, helped raise the profile of the state of California and the sport of surfing. The group also celebrated the Golden State’s obsession with hot-rod racing (“Shut Down,” “409,” “Little Deuce Coupe”) and the pursuit of happiness in less complicated times (“Be True to Your School,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around”).

The Beach Boys showed increasingly sophisticated arrangements with such harmony-filled pop tunes as “Help Me, Rhonda,” “California Girls,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “God Only Knows” and “Sloop John B.” Their release “Good Vibrations” returned The Beach Boys to the top of the charts in 1966.

The Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
