Hi, It’s Rosie. How are those Vail, Colorado vacation plans coming along? Getting excited yet?
Welcome to the fourth edition of my Vail Travel Tips. It’s interactive, so you can plan your Vail vacation with me and WhatToDo.info As I’ve told you before, I have the travel bug, and I love the Colorado high country, especially in summer. I’ve lived in Vail since the early ’70s and have visited many countries and lived around the world, but I always come home. There are so many activities up here for all ages of “kids” that checking out the website is the best way to pick and choose.
Go to vail.whattodo.info and look at the possibilities under “Family Fun.” Normally, activities are varied enough that there’s plenty for everyone to do. For scheduled events, look at the our Home Page and click on “Calendar” or click on it here and go directly to the calendar. There are weekly rodeos, library story hours, kids’ camps and children’s theatre. There’s a free concert at the Ford Amphitheater every Tuesday evening, a wonderful spot for a picnic. Classical music comes for the month of July – check the calendar for Bravo! Vail Music Festival. The Vail International Dance Festival showcases ballet dancers from around the world in early August. Not to miss. You can pedal a paddle boat on Avon Lake just about any time.
Wear those kids out, but you may wear yourself out, too. The list goes on: Adventure Ridge in Vail, arcades and games, water parks, ice cream shops, a climbing wall, gymnastics. You get the drift. This is a wonderful place for children to grow up, and children who come here for a visit will want to linger. It just might be time to find a grassy knoll, a coffee shop, a park bench or have a nap in your hotel.
Happy travels and Welcome, Rosie
Hi, I’m Rosie. Welcome to my Travel Tips page for your Vail, Colorado vacation. It’s interactive, so you can plan your vacation with me and WhatToDo.info. I love to travel, and I love the high country. I’ve lived in Vail since the ’70s, have traveled and lived around the world, but I always come home. Have you ever been to Vail? If you have, let me know what you did on your last Vail vacation. It’s hard to fit it all in, don’t you think? Probably time to come back. If you have questions about visiting these mountains in all their natural beauty, WhatToDo.info and I can find the answers for you. Together, we have comprehensive resources to share with you. This is your chance to interact with What To Do’s lead blog author. Share your experiences and find out how to have a memorable vacation. Finding lodging is your first task. If you don’t know where you want to stay, check out our maps and lodging site and last-minute deals that show what’s cooking in different parts of the valley. Go online and look for the best deals on accommodations at WhatToDo.info. While you search, look for activities that you’d love to do once you unpack your bags. Some days are perfect for adventure; others might be lazy days in the sun or at the spa. There are short outings and big hikes. Talk to me. Personally, when I have free time I like to go for a hike or take out my road bike and pedal the length of the valley. Much of the bike path is along the Eagle River, and it just makes me happy to be there. But maybe you like something else. What kinds of adventures do you look for when you travel? Maybe your partner likes to golf, but you and the kids want to explore. We are connected with hundreds of businesses and service providers who can help plan your day – your entire Vail trip, for that matter. In my opinion, Vail has it all in summer – its clear skies and natural setting invite vacationers to try something new or do the thing they love. Horseback riding or hiking. Biking or golf. Kayaking or a hot air balloon ride. Write to me about your interests and specific things you might want to do to make this your best vacation. Remember, this is Colorado high country, and it’s a wonderland out there. View More of Rosie’s Vail Travel Tips at WhatToDo.info Blog
4th Annual Vail Athletic Club (VAC) Vail Mountain Winter Uphill competition will take place Saturday (Feb. 19) on Vail Mountain. The race will begin at 7 a.m. in LionsHead and take runners, skiers, snowshoers and outdoor enthusiasts approximately 2,000 vertical feet, or two miles, up the groomed trails to Eagle’s Nest at the top of Vail Mountain. The event is organized by long-time Vail Valley locals Ellen Miller and Hooker Lowe to honor the memory of Vail’s-own Lyndon Ellefson who died in 1998. Ellefson was a foreman on the Eagle Bahn Gondola and member of the U.S. Mountain Running Team, which is one of the beneficiaries of race proceeds. The event is also a fundraiser for the Vail Valley Charitable Fund.
The categories for this year’s race are open, which include running shoes, stabilizers or snowshoes; track skis, which include any light weight ski equipment; and heavy metal, which include metal-edged skis such as telemark gear. Participants receive a post-race party with breakfast at Eagle’s Nest, T-shirt, awards and prizes. Prizes will be awarded by overall place and category by gender age group including 18 and under, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 plus.
Registration is available by clicking here or on race-day until 6:30 a.m. at the Chop House Restaurant located at the base of the Eagle Bahn Gondola in LionsHead. Race entry is $30 through Feb. 18 and $40 on race-day.

(Vail)-The Vail Recreation District’s (VRD) Youth Services Department will offer families an opportunity to trade winter clothing with other families in the Vail Valley during the VRD’s first-ever Outerwear Exchange taking place at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16 at Red Sandstone Elementary School gymnasium. The Exchange will allow families to trade for larger sized items such as winter boots, coats, pants and fleece.
According to VRD Youth Services Director Chad Young, the idea to host the Exchange came about from a discussion with parents. Young says if this Exchange is a success, it will become an annual event to help families prepare for winter. “We invest in high-quality gear because our life-style revolves around the outdoors and it’s important to keep our children warm and dry,” said Young. “Many of these items are still in good condition after a child outgrows them. We hope this event will build our sense of community and offer parents a way to get much needed items affordably.”
Costs will be $10 per participant, with $5 supporting VRD Youth Services programming and $5 contributed to a fund to compensate families for an unmet need. “For example, an infant receives a coat from a now two-year-old, the two-year-old receives a three-year-old’s old coat and so on,” said Young. “The VRD would like to have money available so a parent with a 12-year-old with no available coat can receive money to go buy one.”
The VRD will accept donations of clothing prior to and during the exchange and items should be in good condition and clean. Items not traded and left will be donated to a local charity in need of the items.
For more information, contact Young at 970-479-2292 or e-mail him at cyoung@vailrec.com.
