A collaboration between the Art Center in Gypsum, the Town of Vail Art in Public Places program and the Vail Recreation District’s (VRD) Nature Center means a summer of creative opportunities for kids in the Vail Valley. The three organizations announced recently the popular Art in Nature program is underway for the summer.
The Art in Nature program provides children, ages five years and older, with the instruction, opportunity and materials to express themselves artistically, while learning about the natural world in a local and a global way. “This program is unique because it’s appealing to kids who really thrive at artistic activities, as well as more scientifically-minded kids,” said Tom Gaylord, Director of the Nature Center. “They discover a broad range of subjects, from local ecology, to international artistic forms.”
The classes, all taught outdoors at the Nature Center located near Ford Park, take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays through Aug. 20. Some of the projects participants will focus on are building mobiles and kites, candle- and paper-making, watercolor painting and sculptures. The cost of the program is $45 and includes supplies. Students can join the class for a single day or for the entire summer, but registration is required by calling 970-479-2291. A full description of courses may be viewed at www.vailrec.com or www.theartctr.com.
Additionally, for the less artistically-inclined, the Nature Center is offering an endless selection of other activities for residents and visitors in the Vail Valley this summer. With options that include plant and animal exhibits, wildflower and morning bird walks, evening beaver pond tours, a summer speaker series, a hiking club, fly fishing and stream ecology classes, nature photography classes, creekside tours, campfire story telling and star gazing, the world-class Nature Center’s summer lineup will please nature lovers and nature newbies alike. The Nature Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Labor Day weekend and is located adjacent to Ford Park and across the street from the Vail athletic fields.
