On a visit to the Vail Valley, whether it’s for the first time or a return trip, vacationers can become explorers and take a little Day Trip to discover just what’s around the corner and at higher altitude. At the Minturn exit just west of Vail, turn south and head to Leadville. The scenery on the way is stunning – Battle Mountain Pass and then Tennessee Pass – will make you want to do it again for the views of the surrounding peaks including Notch Mountain and the Homestake Valley. Historic Camp Hale has broad vistas and places to picnic and do a little fishing. Leadville is about 14 miles further on and has shopping, train rides, mine tours, and an excellent museum. Dining and cafe options are delicious and casual.
