Vacation and Kids in Vail for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving 2011 in Vail

Kids love to celebrate everything. Winter. Thanksgiving. Let them eat Turkey and some mashed potatoes, a little pumpkin pie. Then dress them up in warm clothes and take them skiing or go build a snowman. Soon it will be time for hot chocolate. Then they’ll remember the Pirate Ship in Vail at the top of Bridge Street behind Los Amigos (Mexican food extraordinaire). They can play there in winter, too. Ride the free bus and take a look at all the changes, construction, and look for the fire trucks at the fire station between Vail and LionsHead. Get off at the Dobson Ice Arena and go skating or watch skating. Or just turn around and go into the Vail Public Library. There’s a children’s room stacked with books. Check out the Story Hour times. Santa may be coming to town. Read and talk and relax together. Get back on the bus and go over to LionsHead. A new outdoor ice skating rink at Arrabelle is a great gathering place. Even if they don’t ski yet, you can ride up the gondola to the very top of Vail Mountain and just watch them stare. – Have a snack at Bistro 14 and more hot chocolate These are big, these Rocky Mountains – time to learn some geography. Back down the mountain in either LionsHead or Vail Village there are some cozy spots in hotel lobbies and restaurants (Vail’s Mountain Haus, Vail Cascade, or the Gasthof Gramshammer) to have a snack or eat lunch. Pick up a copy of What To Do Magazine and find out about special happenings while you are here. Bundle up and wait till dark for the tree lighting in Vail and a Gingerbread House contest and tree lighting over in Beaver Creek. Use the What To Do maps to find your way to Beaver Creek, and remember – it’s all an adventure. And this is a terrific place to have an adventure.
