Thanksgiving Weekend is the start to the winter season in Vail. Celebrate with some turkey and stuffing if you like but don’t forget all the great things you can do while you’re here. WhatToDo.Info has the details you need to know for your Rocky Mountain holiday getaway.
1. Vail Mountain opens the week before Thanksgiving, so be ready to ski or snowboard when you get to the mountains. The weather turned cold, snow is already on the slopes, and the shops have the latest equipment ready for you to rent or demo.

4. At Solaris (formerly Crossroads), go to bol for lunch or to try your hand at bowling. The sculptures and lighting outside will surprise you after two years of construction. It was worth the wait. 5. Take the free bus from Vail Village to LionsHead and check out the ice skating rink at Arrabelle at Vail Square. It ‘s a great new gathering place.
6. Take a walk. Stop for hot chocolate. Do a little window shopping.
7. Ask at your hotel about shows at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek. The theatre has a long list of winter performances for the whole family.
8. Over in Beaver Creek, they are having their Holiday Tree lighting on Friday evening. You can go inside and see the entries in the Gingerbread House competition. There’ll be fireworks (and more hot chocolate).
9. Warren Miller’s latest and greatest ski movie “Wintervention” is showing Friday and Saturday at the Vilar.
10. Wander up to the second floor of the Vail Transportation Center and visit the Colorado Ski Museum and gift shop. You’ll learn alot about the history and excitement of skiing.
