Vail’s tenth annual “Make a Difference Day” food drive is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 23 at the City Market grocery stores in Vail, Avon and Eagle as well as Wal-Mart in Avon. Law enforcement officers from Vail, Avon and Eagle will be located at these locations asking for your donation. The Vail Police Department is coordinating the drive and has set a goal of collecting 400,000 pounds of food, well beyond the 330,000 goal set last year. With collections underway throughout the summer, the drive has already netted 48,000 pounds, including 3,200 pounds collected during a softball game kickoff between Vail’s public safety team and the New York Philharmonic in July.
Donations of food, clothing, cash or checks will be encouraged on the day of the drive, or can be made in advance from now until Oct. 23 throughout the valley. Food collection points are currently in place at City Market in Vail, Market Place on Meadow Drive in Vail Village, the Town of Vail Municipal building and most Eagle County schools.
“Make a Difference Day” is sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation and is the nation’s largest day of volunteering. Events such as clothing drives and community clean-up days will be taking place across the country.
For Vail’s collection drive, non-perishable items such as canned goods, rice, beans, pasta, cereal and juices are suggested and needed. Participants are asked to refrain from donating items stored in glass containers, items with expired dates or homemade food items. A $1 donation equates to five pounds of food. Cash or checks made out to “TOV Make a Difference Day” are also appreciated and can be brought or mailed to the Vail Municipal Building at 75 S. Frontage Road, Vail, CO 81657. A tax receipt can be given for a check donation.
All food collected will remain in Eagle County with donations distributed to the Salvation Army, the Bright Future Foundation and the Food Rescue Express. For details, contact Moses Gonzales or Craig Westering in the Vail Police Department at 479-2210.
