VAIL RECREATION DISTRICT'S FIRST ANNUAL VAIL KIDS' ADVENTURE RACE AUGUST 7

VRD Kids' Adventure Race

Ages Six to 12 Will Participate in Fun Challenges and Outdoor Sports on August 7, Registration Underway Adventurous, rope-swinging, mountain biking and independent kids are encouraged to participate in the Vail Recreation District’s (VRD) first-annual Vail Kids’ Adventure Race, taking place Saturday, Aug. 7 in Vail Village and on Vail Mountain and its surrounding wilderness and creeks. During this inaugural race, kids ages six through 12 will team up into pairs and learn the thrill of adventure racing while they participate in a variety of outdoor sports and challenges including mountain biking, hiking, tubing, archery, a low ropes course, a zip line, Tarzan rope, slip-n-slide and more.  Vail Kids’ Adventure Race organizer Billy Mattison says the race will emphasize teamwork, problem solving, and fun. “The idea behind the race was to create an event that had all the fun things we dreamed about as kids,” says Mattison.

“By putting zip-lines, slip-n-slides, rope bridges, tubing, mud crawls and anything else we can dream up, the kids are going to have a true adventure and an incredible time. We want the kids to cross the finish line pumped up with smiles on their faces and a feeling of accomplishment.” Mattison says the race also will encourage team independence as family members will be only allowed to watch as the teams of two navigate the course on their own. “Part of the fun will be to allow the kids to take ownership of the race and do it by themselves,” says Mattison. “We’ll have plenty of checkpoints, aid stations and course marshals to help as needed.” The race will begin at 9 a.m. at the base of Vail Mountain in Vail Village. Registration cost is $150 per team of two, and teams will be divided between three

to seven years old, eight to nine years old, and 10 to 12 years old. Registration will be limited to the first 50 teams; call the VRD at 970-479-2880. Event sponsors are currently being sought and will receive mention in event collateral, advertisements, news releases and onsite at the event.
