“Aida” performed by Teatro Lirico D’Europa at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek, Colorado February 9, 2009
Graciously underwritten by Marilyn & Jim Steane
Guiseppi Verdi’s “Aida” has it all — treachery, love, power, jealousy, betrayal and death. It is the story of Aida, an Ethiopian slave and Radames, an officer in the Egyptian army. Though their countries are at war, they secretly fall in love and he betrays his homeland. He’s captured, tried and condemned, but the passion they share can be extinguished only by death as the lovers are entombed alive, together for eternity.
Verdi’s score is packed with showstoppers, from the tenor’s soaring aria “Celeste Aida” to the massive chorus and trumpet fanfares of the “Triumphal March” to the moving duet of the final tragic tomb scene.
“Aida” is the work that put the “Grand” into “Grand Opera,” and this production is stunning. The opulence of the ancient world is recreated through elaborate costumes and scenery, and will transport the audience from the sunburned sands of Egypt to the darkness of the tomb.
This year marks Teatro Lirico D’Europa’s fifth season of performances at the Vilar Performing Arts Center.
