Vail Valley Fly Fishing
Whether you’re an avid or beginning fisherman, the Vail Valley offers abundant opportunities for fishing enthusiasts. Don a pair of waders and cast for Rainbow, German Brown, Cutthroat and Brook trout. Or cast your line as you drift on a raft or dory on our idyllic rivers and lakes. The most popular fishing spots are the Colorado, the Eagle and the gold-medal waters of Gore Creek and lovely Nottingham Lake in Avon.
Colorado fishing licenses are required for those ages 16 and older. Local outfitters offer a variety of trips, fly-fishing instruction and tips about water, flies, equipment, and techniques. A good source for fishing information is the US Forest Service, 970-827-5715 at Meadow Mountain in Minturn.
Fly Fishing
The Vail Valley is home to some of the finest fly fishing in the nation. With access to the Colorado, Eagle and Roaring Fork Rivers (and more with a bit of a commute), the possibilities are endless. Fly fishing is generally done as “Wade trips” (aptly titled for the waterproof waders, or suspender pants, that the fisher wears, allowing them to wade into the water from the shore as they cast for their catch) or “Float trips” (incorporating both boating and fishing). A raft or boat, usually piloted by the guide, allows the fisher to access both shores and everything in between. Most Vail Valley guides have intimate knowledge of area fly fishing options and can find the right trip for you. Many also offer group workshops and clinics, so be sure to check out the full fishing menu to find the right activity for you and your family. Vendors will set you up with everything you need: from rods to flies to waders to your essential Colorado Division of Wildlife fishing license. If you’re a seasoned fisher, check out the cutting edge equipment that most vendors carry. See “What to Wear – What to Bring” at vail.funafar.com
