Vail Valley Cross-Country Skiing
For a change of pace from downhill skiing or snowboarding, try cross-country or Nordic skiing. Amazing and easily accessible cross-country and Nordic tracks are available in Cordillera, at McCoy Park in Beaver Creek, at Adventure Ridge on Vail Mountain and at the Nordic Center at the Vail Golf Course.
For a memorable backcountry experience, take a tour of the 10th Mountain Hut System. More than a dozen huts and cabins along the 250-mile trail can be rented for overnight stops; reservations are required.
Cross-Country Skiing
Though the thrill of downhill (or “alpine”) skiing is undeniable, another favorite winter pastime in the Vail Valley is Cross-Country (“XC”) skiing. The primary functional difference between XC skiing and alpine skiing is that in XC skiing, the skier is attached to the ski only with the toe of the boot, leaving the heel “free.” In alpine skiing, the entire foot is attached to the ski. The free heel allows a XC skier to climb, descend and traverse terrain making the sport a truly “cross-country” activity. In alpine skiing and snowboarding, the participant is limited to the range of downhill slope. Although XC Skiing definitely lives up to its reputation as the “world’s best aerobic workout,” newcomers should not be frightened. XC Skiing can be as easy as a pleasant glide through a neighborhood park … or the best overall fitness experience of your life. Go at your own pace, pick a destination, and you’re. Because you can XC Ski just about anywhere with snow, you can match the terrain to suit your fitness level and interests. ?The Vail Valley has no shortage of wonderful XC venues. There are established Nordic Centers where you can pick up rentals and head out on groomed and packed terrain. Alternatively, you can check with an expert and choose your own backcountry adventure.
